Week 5: Oceanside Pirates 20, La Costa Canyon Mavericks 31
The La Costa Canyon Mavericks improved to 5-0 on the season with a 31-20 win over Avocado League opponent, the Oceanside Pirates.
Following a field goal on their opening drive, the Mavericks’ Aiden Lippert took a reverse 74 yards for LCC’s first touchdown of the game, putting them up 10-0 with 3:22 to go in the first quarter. This kickstarted a Mavs offense that would go on to put up 24 points in the first half.
Oceanside’s offense struggled to get off the ground in the first half, scoring their first points before the end of the second quarter on a 29-yard rushing touchdown from quarterback Kyrin Beachem. The Pirates relied heavily on Beachem as he had two rushing touchdowns through the first three quarters.
The Mavericks would only score once in the second half, but it was enough to lift them to a win over the Pirates.
Oceanside falls to 1-3 this season with this loss, and they will head home to face Mater Dei Catholic next week. LCC will travel to San Marcos and take on a Knights team that is coming off a 35-24 loss to Carlsbad.
The La Costa Canyon Mavericks (4-0) are off to a hot start this season, and currently sit at No. 1 in all of San Diego Section competition, according to MaxPreps. This week they will host the Oceanside Pirates (1-2) in an Avocado League game.
LCC began the season with a 19-7 win over Cathedral Catholic, and kept on rolling with wins against Vista, San Clemente, and fellow Avocado League team, the El Camino Wildcats.
The Mavericks will now go into their second Avocado League game of the season, when Oceanside comes to town.
Maintaining their undefeated record will not be an easy feat for LCC against an Oceanside team with plenty of talent and fresh legs from a bye week.
The Pirates were on rest this last weekend, but in their most recent game two weeks ago, they dropped a close one to San Marcos, losing to the Knights, 49-42.
Although it was a loss, the Pirates showed they have some offensive playmakers that LCC will not want to overlook.
Senior Kyrin Beachem passed for 195 yards and two touchdowns, as well as rushed for 287 yards on 25 carries and three more touchdowns.
Sophomore running back Kavika Tua also showed out against the Knights, with 106 yards on 11 carries, and four catches for 135 yards and two touchdowns.
This versatile Pirates attack has had a week to rest and study the tape on the Mavericks, and LCC has been dominant through this first half of the season, with no signs of slowing down. The two will collide at 7 p.m.this Friday.
