Monte Vista Monarchs 34, Patrick Henry Patriots 27
Week 3 of PPR is officially in the record books. The Monte Vista Monarchs(2-1) beat the Patrick Henry Patriots(0-3), at home, 34-27.
Tonight was all about Monte Vista running back Jahmon McClendon. It only took 3 plays into the game for McClendon to run the ball 47 yards to the house. He would follow up his 47 yard touchdown with a 90 yard touchdown run to put the Monarchs up 28-0. By the end of the night, McClendon would score 5 touchdowns and rush for over 200 yards. Keep an eye on for him for a potential Silver Pigskin nominee.
After halftime, the game looked very one-sided, but to the Patriots credit, Patrick Henry would make it interesting down the stretch. After putting together a few good series, the Patriots found themselves only down 1 possession with 2 minutes left to go in the game. Unfortunately for Patrick Henry, that’s as close as they would come to beating the Monarchs. Monte Vista would run out the clock and hand the ball of to… you guess it, #24 Jahmon McClendon who would get the first down to seal the game.
Key Take Away :
Monte Vista has found their identity in the run game. If Jahmon McClendon keeps running through defenses the way he did tonight, I don’t know if any team in San Diego can stop him.
This was a solid performance from Patrick Henry, especially coming off of a tough loss last week. Tonight they battled through adversity and showed their true character.
Next week Patrick Henry will travel up El Capitan to take on the Vaqueros. Monte Vista will be at home again as they take on an out of town opponent Casteel, who will travel all the way from Queen Creek, Arizona.

PREVIEW:
We are all set for week three of PPR! This week the Monte Vista Monarchs (1-1) will take on the Patrick Henry Patriots (0-2). Originally the game was scheduled Friday at Patrick Henry, but due to an issue regarding the field, the teams will now play at Monte Vista at 7:00p.m. The game however will still be considered a home game for Patrick Henry.
Both teams are coming off tough losses and will be eager to emerge out of week three with a win.
Last Friday Patrick Henry was severed a serious slice of humble pie after getting beaten by Bishop 77-0. As much as a blowout loss stings in the moment, sometimes it’s easier to deal with that type of adversity earlier in the season, rather than down the stretch when you’re fighting for a playoff spot. After speaking with Head Coach Mike Martinez, he fully understands the position his team is in and their need for a strong bounce back game against the Monarchs.
Monte Vista is looking to have a strong showing as well to put them back above .500. In their loss against University City, the Monarchs showed they would not go down without a fight. After the Centurions jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter, the Monarchs would respond after halftime by putting up 15 unanswered points of their own in the third quarter. Although University City would notch the win 27-15, Monte Vista showed they have some serious fight within them.
Keys for Patrick Henry: Have a short memory! There is a lot of season left to be played and the Patriots shouldn’t let one bad performance define the outcome of their season. On field, they need to get more out of their offense. Patrick Henry has multiple rushers who can get into the high double digits, and must use that to their advantage.
Keys for Monte Vista: Don’t play from behind! The Monarchs cannot allow their opponents to jump out to huge leads early on in the game, and then try to play catch up. Getting running back Jahmon Mcclendon going early will be a major key towards their success. He’s already rushed for 6 touchdowns this season and we’re only in week two! Once Monte Vista establishes Mcclendon, that should open up the passing game.
