Nelson Photo Pigskin Idol Game of the Week: San Diego Cavers 33, Patrick Henry Patriots 14

Week Nine Nelson Photo Pigskin Idol Game of the Week brought Hilltop’s Daniela Diaz to Balboa Stadium as the Cavers hosted the Patrick Henry Patriots for homecoming.  San Diego ran their way to victory to remain undefeated with a final score of 33-14 over Patrick Henry.

Homecoming was one to remember for King Gustavo Quintero and Brianna Caloca.  It was also one to remember for Cavers head coach, Charles James, as he was a deemed Coach of the Week along with $1,000 for the football program.

San Diego was quick to get on the board as Quinn O’Connor connects with senior Thomas Marcus for the 26-yard touchdown.  Then in the second quarter, Nelson Photo Player of the Game, Raiden Hunter, would find his way to the end zone with a three yard touchdown.   That would do it for the first half as the Cavers took a 14-0 lead.

In the third quarter, Raiden Hunter would add two more touchdowns on his stat line of the night from ten yards out and 36-yards out putting the Cavers up 26-0.  To finish off the scoring for San Diego was Marcellous Runnells after he cuts the edge of the Patriots defense for a 73-yard touchdown run.

The Patriots would not get shut out as the quarterback Ethan Gomez keeps it to find the end zone in the fourth quarter.   Hussein Ragab would also see the end zone for a five yard touchdown run.  Though the Cavers came out on top tonight, the Patriots defense would deliver some hard hitting tackles led by Ragab and Carlito Nothalf.

The undefeated Cavers visit the Crawford Colts (6-2, 1-1) and their new stadium lights.  Meanwhile, the Patrick Henry Patriots will play at Kearny High School for a home matchup against the University City Centurions (7-1,2-0).  The Prep Pigskin Report doesn’t stop on Friday nights.  You can also see full versions of featured segments on KUSI.com under Prep Pigskin Report as well as view complete raw highlights of previous weeks.

Preview: With Week Nine here, there are not many schools that are undefeated.  In fact, there is only one, the San Diego Cavers.  The Cavers are 7-0 on the year and haven’t had this amount of success since their head coach, Charles James, was a freshman at San Diego High in 1994.

This week their mentality and focus remains the same as they host the Patrick Henry Patriots for Homecoming.  The Patriots are 2-5 (1-1), but can they deliver the upset of the week and take down the Cavers?

Though the Cavers have their best start since 1994, they are still keeping their head down and grinding every day.  Coach James expressed, “Yes we are 7-0, but the guys are pretty focused [on competing] one game at a time.”

As if having a perfect record wasn’t creating some buzz already, Senior Thomas Marcus also announced his commitment to University of Arizona on the PrePR last week.  Marcus has a total 302 receiving yards and nine total touchdowns on the year thus far. Also leading the offense is junior quarterback Quinn O’Connor with a total of 891 passing yards and 15 passing touchdowns.

It’s safe to say the Patrick Henry Patriots will have their hands full this upcoming Friday, but with the help and leadership of defensive players Victor Alvarez, Ethan Stowers, Carlito Nothalf, and Isaah Johnson, they can limit the Cavers’ offense. Junior quarterback Ethan Gomez completed 163 passing yards last week against the La Jolla Vikings, including a 61-yard bomb to Tyjhah Reid for the touchdown.

The Cavers host the Patriots this week for homecoming night.  Tune in to the Prep Pigskin Report to catch the highlights read by this week’s Pigskin Idol, Daniela Diaz, all starting at 10:30pm.
