Week 9: Point Loma Pointers 33, Lincoln Hornets 20

On a night where thunderstorms were the main storyline for many San Diego football matchups, Point Loma’s electric defensive effort was all the buzz in their 33-20 win over Lincoln.

It was the Lincoln Hornets’ Homecoming game, but their dazzling parade was rained on, both literally and figuratively. Point Loma rattled off 24 unanswered points after trailing 20-9 late in the second quarter, spoiling the Hornets’ hopes of a Homecoming week win.

The Pointers held Lincoln scoreless in the second half and forced three turnovers, including a 23-yard, game-sealing pick-six by JL Skinner III late in the fourth quarter.

Before the rainstorm began impacting play, Lincoln leaned on a strong passing game in the first half.

Wide receivers Don Chapman and Keyshawn Smith were phenomenal for the Hornets, as they combined for over 100 receiving yards and two touchdowns in the first half. A 50-yard catch-and-run score by Smith gave Lincoln its largest lead of the game.

In the second half, inclement weather caused problems for the Hornets’ pass-heavy offense. A few of their snaps from shotgun went over quarterback Raymond Spriggs’ head, putting Lincoln in some difficult third-and-long situations in the third quarter.

Point Loma, however, welcomed the downpour and utilized a dynamic rushing attack to chew clock and piece together long scoring drives. Running backs Kaden Gill and Christian Hall controlled the game in the second half, scoring the equalizing and game-deciding rushing touchdowns, respectively.

When Lincoln trailed 27-20 with three minutes left and were looking to put together a miraculous touchdown drive, Skinner III turned out the lights with his pick-six, giving the Pointers a 13-point lead.

On the Hornets’ ensuing drive, Tristan Shafer picked off Spriggs again with an impressive one-handed snag, and the game was all but over.

Both teams move to 5-3 on the season with a couple more important league tests left on the schedule. Lincoln travels to face Cathedral Catholic next Friday. Point Loma is back at home hosting St. Augustine next week.

PREVIEW

The Lincoln Hornets take on the visiting Point Loma Pointers in a pivotal league test on Friday night. Both teams enter the game 0-1 in league play, so this Week 9 battle could prove to be crucial in their postseason campaigns.

Point Loma is coming off a tough 45-33 loss against Madison in their first league game of the season. Though the Pointers endured their third loss of the year last week, they have been competitive in all of their games, and their defeats have come by a combined total of 15 points.

Point Loma boasts a strong defense, and they’ve held their opponents under 20 points four times this year.

The defensive unit is headlined by do-it-all defensive back J.L. Skinner III. The 6-foot-3 senior has become an elite ball-hawk and run stuffer; he leads the team in tackles, interceptions, and defensive touchdowns.

Lincoln rolls into Week 9 after a dominant 42-14 win over La Jolla last Friday. The Hornets have been untouchable at home, as they have outscored opponents 192-62 on their turf.

In their effort to keep a perfect record at home, they’ll bank on sophomore quarterback Raymond Spriggs Jr. continuing his stellar play. Spriggs was clinical in their win last week, completing 20 of his 23 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns.
