El Camino Wildcats 26, Poway Titans 21

This slugfest of two unbeaten teams in the north county was no slouch as the El Camino Wildcats  improve to 3-0 in 2015, defeating the Poway Titans 26-21. Next week El Camino will have a bye-week and Poway (2-1) will face PPR top-9 team Mission Hills in San Marcos.

The Wildcats defense indeed give the Titans’ offense a night to remember as they rushed the passer well enough to force four turnovers, 2 interceptions from senior John Armentrout and another from Ricky Villagomez, who sealed the deal with an interception with 25 seconds left in the 4th for a 26-21 victory at Herb Meyer Stadium.

This wasn’t all El Camino’s night though in the beginning, after a score from El Camino with 11 seconds left in the 2nd quarter to make the game 13-7, the Wildcats needed a wake up call after giving up a 97-yard kickoff return to Poway’s Jared Adelman to take the lead for Poway at halftime, 14-13, right as the clock hit :00’s.

The Wildcats tonight took some mean hits from Poway, but El Camino pushed back. Starting Quarterback for El Camino Beau Gallegos did not return towards the end of the game so it was up to Christian Betz to steer the ship and they didn’t miss a beat. El Camino scored the winning touchdown by running back Christopher Brown on a 34-yard run to help El Camino go up with 7 minutes left in the 4th quarter. The defense did the wrest.

PREVIEW: The battle for an early 3-0 record in 2015 is on the line this Friday evening at Herb Meyer Stadium, 7 p.m. in Oceanside for a non-conference matchup between the Poway Titans (2-0) and the El Camino Wildcats (2-0).

Poway is off to its best start (2-0) since 2011 after defeating Mt. Miguel last week at home 24-6. That same year in 2011, the Titans won a CIF Division I section title. So far for Poway on offense the connection of QB Robbie Sullivan and WR Chris Butler (4 catches, 110 yards vs Mt. Miguel) works this season in the victory over the Matadors in week 2, including sneaky defensive work from Jared Adelman, who sealed a victory with a QB strip on defense for a 49-yard touchdown.

Meanwhile El Camino is also coming off an impressive victory themselves over the Mira Mesa Marauders, 23-0 in week 2. QB Beau Gallegos found WR John Armentrout (154 all-purpose yards, 2 TD’s vs. Mira Mesa). On top of that, the Wildcat defense will try to give the Titans’ a night to remember with MLB Spencer Katoanga, who recorded 107 tackles in 2014 and DE Kenidy Malauulu, making 66 tackles last year. Look for the Wildcat defense to try and contain a solid Titans offense.
