Grossmont 40, Poway 7
The Grossmont Foothillers stressed one thing during their pre game walkthrough. Focus. That is exactly how Grossmont played tonight vs the Titans of Poway. Grossmont jumped out of the gates early and scored on an 80 yard drive. Calvin Farris called his own number on an option play to put Grossmont up 7-0 early. After forcing a Poway punt, the Foothillers kept the momentum going. Farris hit running back Jake Harr on a screen play in which Harr took to the house for 69 yards and a 13-0 lead after Poway managed to block the point after. Poway struggled to move the ball offensively but their defense showed signs of resistance. The Titans defense was able to stop the Foothillers on a goal line stand and took over. Dropped passes and penalties forced Poway to punt the ball back to Grossmont. The Foothillers capitalized on the missed opportunities from Poway by putting points on the board. Farris hit AJ Shaw on a deep 57 yard pass that was good for six. Poway had to answer quickly to avoid the blow out.
Down 20-0, Poway began to move the ball quickly in the second quarter. Chris Issak capped off the drive with a 15 yard touchdown pass to Chris Butler. Poway shortened Grossmont’s lead to 13 but the Foothillers were able to prevent Poway from scoring again. Grossmont aired it out again to set up a 28 yard roll out quarterback keeper by Farris that went for a touchdown. Grossmont’s stingy defense was able to force another three and out and put the dagger into the back of the Titans. Farris hit Kyle Pineda on a 29 yard touchdown pass to put the Foothillers up 33-7. Poway struggled to stay on the field offensively in credit to the Grossmont defense, but was unable to prevent the big play against Farris and his high powered offense. Farris connected one last time with Hunter Reiner for an 11 yard score. Grossmont held off Poway 40-7 to improve their record to (3-2). Poway’s struggles continue with a young roster as they drop to (1-5).
