Rancho Bernardo Broncos 31, Westview Wolverines 21

Friday’s game between the Rancho Bernardo Broncos and the Westview Wolverines could easily be defined as a game that came down to shifts in momentum. It was a back and forth battle between the two teams, but ultimately it was the Broncos who were able to control the momentum and secure the win.

In this game, it was the Broncos who got off to a fast start. Noah Morris threw a fifty-five-yard touchdown pass to Dustin Connelly for the first score of the night. The Wolverines would answer with a lengthy drive of their own, but were eventually stopped short and forced to punt. Once again in control of the ball the Broncos were now looking to add to their lead… And that’s when the momentum swung over to the Wolverines. The Broncos fumbled the football on their next drive, and watched as Westview’s Omar Krichati returned the fumble all the way for a touchdown. To make matters worse for Rancho Bernardo, their next drive would be a quick three-and-out that was capped off by a bad punt giving Westview excellent field position. The Wolverines wasted no time taking advantage of the situation. Three plays later Beau Nelson would find CJ Franklin in the end zone, and all of a sudden, the Broncos had lost their lead and were looking like a team ready to unravel. A stagnant second quarter by both teams would keep the game close and had the Wolverines up by a score of 14-7 at the half.

Rancho Bernardo’s head coach Tristan McCoy must have had a really good talk with his boys during halftime, because the Broncos came out in the second half and took complete control of the game. Rancho Bernardo would start the second half off with a quick field goal, and follow up with defense. As soon as Beau Nelson got the ball back it was intercepted by Rancho Bernardo’s Luke Manos and returned for a touchdown. In a matter of two plays the Broncos had recaptured the lead and the momentum had switched back over to the Rancho Bernardo sidelines. This time, the momentum would stay with the Broncos for the remainder of the game.

The Broncos would go on to score twenty-four unanswered points, and allow only a single Wolverine touchdown for the rest of the game. There was simply no quit from the Broncos, and that is why they were able to storm back into the game. Rancho Bernardo took care of their offensive woes and forced several mistakes from a Wolverine squad that had been pretty safe all season. A dominant second half performance would have the Broncos coming away with the victory by a final score of 31-21.

The Rancho Bernardo Broncos will be looking for their third straight win when they take on the Del Norte Nighthawks. Westview’s Wolverines will be looking to bounce back as they face the Vista Panthers in Week 10. Both games are expected to take place on Friday, Oct 27 at 7:00 PM

PREVIEW: Friday’s matchup between the Rancho Bernardo Broncos and the Westview Wolverines will feature two teams that will be looking to continue their success from the previous week. Both teams are coming off of Week 8 victories, unfortunately that also means that someone’s streak will be coming to an end on Friday night.

Both teams are coming off of wins that were impressive in their own right. For Rancho Bernardo, a dominant performance against the Vista Panthers saw them win their game by a final score of 24-7. The Broncos offense turned in touchdowns both through the air and on the ground while holding their opponent to a single score on the night. The Westview Wolverines were involved in a much closer contest against the Poway Titans. The Wolverines needed overtime to decide their contest but came away with an impressive 37-36 victory in the closing seconds.

With plenty of offense on display for both teams, this game’s winner may come down to the defense. The Rancho Bernardo Broncos can turn to several different players when they look to score which will force their opponents to stay alert on all plays. If the Broncos can limit the Wolverine attack and put up points of their own, they may be able to build a lead and stay ahead for the remainder of the night. As the Westview Wolverines may know, it is not about grabbing the lead, it’s all about maintaining it. In their last game, the Wolverines were ahead of their opponents by double digits, but saw their lead shrink as the game went on and were ultimately forced to go to overtime to get the win. Defense may also prove to be a key factor for Westview, as any breathing room given to the Broncos could result in points for Rancho Bernardo. The Wolverines need to “keep their foot on the gas pedal” and come up with key stops in order to put Rancho Bernardo away and secure the win.
