The Week 9 matchup between the St. Augustine Saintsmen and the Madison Warhawks is one of the most exciting contests of the week.
It is an important Western League battle. One of the toughest leagues in the county, the Western League is made up of Cathedral, Point Loma, Lincoln, Madison, and St. Augustine.
Both schools are 5-2 overall and 1-1 in league play. On paper, this is one of the most even matchups you’ll see. Each team has won a Western League game and each school has lost to Cathedral, which sits in first place as of now.
Both of these programs have bounced around the PPR’s Top 9 list all year long.
For Saints, it has been a balance of strong offense and tough defense all year long. Coming into Week 9, Saints have scored an average of almost 30 points per game and have held opponents to 14 points per game.
On offense, Angelo Peraza has been stellar with over 1,200 passing yards and 11 touchdown passes on the season. Byron Cardwell has led the ground game with over 600 rushing yards and eight touchdowns.
Coming off a tough battle against Cathedral in the 2018 installment of the “Holy Bowl,” the Saintsmen will look to get back on the winning side of things.
For Madison, Kenan Christon has been a standout since day one of the 2018 season. Christon is a leading contender on the PPR Silver Pigskin watch list.
Christon has rushed for 745 yards and has scored nine touchdowns. Christon is one of the quickest players in the county and has shown why he can explode for big plays on any given Friday.
On defense, Mike Jones has been a force to be reckoned with. Jones has recorded 34 tackles on the season.
It is a battle of two storied San Diego football programs. Whenever Western League teams meet, there always seems to be extra intrigue.
