Preview: San Diego Cavers vs. Mar Vista Mariners

Week one is upon us and it is becoming a tradition for the San Diego Cavers and the Mar Vista Mariners as they kick off their first game of the football season for the second year in a row. However this time it will be the Cavers who hold the home field advantage when they face off Friday night at Balboa Stadium.

The Cavers, who haven’t had a winning season since 2011 when they went 7-4, are coming off of a 1-9 season, and have only won a total of two games in the past three seasons. Needless to say they are hungry for a win come Friday night.

Coach Charles James will be returning for his second season with the Cavers along with guard, Indae Gammon who is also versatile at playing inside linebacker. Gammon will be heading into his final season as he approaches his senior year and holds thus far a total of 34 solo tackles and 78 total tackles.

The Mariners on the other hand are coming off of an 8-4 winning season, and they look to be coming in hot with a skilled and seasoned offense, including senior quarterback Mike Wilson and senior running back Khalil Spruill. Spruill has 2,132 total rushing yards and 26 total touch downs, with 13 in both his sophomore and junior season.

As the two teams approach their second match up to kick start their season, will the Cavers home field advantage help to advance them for the win? Or will The Mariners veteran offense set the path for the beginning of another winning season? Tune into the Prep Pigskin Report this Friday night at 10:30 pm to find out!
