San Marcos Knights 17, Oceanside Pirates 13

Tonight’s season opener was filled with blood, sweat and defense. That’s right, the Oceanside Pirates battled the San Marco’s Knights tonight at Oceanside High School. Both teams defense played a game of tug-o-war, going back and fourth in an attempt to stall scoring. Despite Oceanside’s efforts the Knights collected their first win of the season and left the field 17-13.

In the first half of the game we see a never-ending game of tug-o-war. By the end of the 1st, Pirates quarterback, Alex Miller makes a phenomenal 70yd complete pass to Kyrin Beachem. PAT good, Pirates start the party 7-0. As the 1st quarter ends, the Knight’s quickly fear this game won’t play out in their favor. With Miles Hasting thinking fast, he sets up his touchdown with a 57yd catch and play to wide receiver Kyle Philips, in the blink of an eye, Hastings makes a swift 3yd touchdown pass to Quinn Roff. At the end of the half, scoreboard says 7-7.

The second half picked up enough steam to get the crowd ready for another half. In the 3rd quarter Oceanside’s Armand Fesili completes a 4yd touchdown run (PAT no good) while shortly after Ethan Cline decides to put his pedal to the metal and rack up the 85yd kick off return touchdown that put the Knight’s ahead 14-13.

As the 3rd quarter comes to an end, the last 15minutes of this game become the most important 15 minutes of this game. With both teams teeter tottering on the edge of victory, fans could not possibly predict the game-deciding factor. With time working against the Knights and a no downs left in their favor, the Knights go for a 27yd field goal. With the help of Caleb Mancini, the Knights were able to walk away from the Friday Night Light’s victorious (17-13 Knights) in their first Avocado League game of the season.

PREVIEW: As we welcome week 4 of high school football, we also welcome the Avocado league’s first week of conference games. In our Friday night light line up you’ll see the San Marcos Knights (3-0) play the Oceanside Pirates (1-1) at the Pirates home turf at 7pm.

So far we’ve seen the Pirates roster loaded with potential and sprinkled with consistency. Players that’ll catch your eye this week are Senior Jonathon Segi (LB/RB) as well as Junior Kyrin Beachem (CB/WR). In just 2 games Beachem has 1 TD and 96 rush yards and 64 passing yards total. Segi holds 297 total passing yards and 6 touchdowns. With a bumpy non-conference start against the San Clemente Tritons, the Pirates asserted themselves as a force to be reckoned with after their game against Morse High School last week.

The Knights bring us a tidy list of talent, with 2 of our 3 prospects committed to the collegiate level. In regards to eye-catching prospects we suggest keeping your eyes peeled for junior quarterback Miles Hastings and Seniors Kyle Phillips (WR/CB) and Josh Bornes (MLB/RB). In 3 games, Hasting’s holds 300 total passing yards, 27 pass completions and 3 passing touchdowns. Phillips, a UCLA commit averages at 87.5 yards per game and holds 2 receiving touchdowns as well as 3 total touchdowns. SDSU commit, Bornes carries 6 solo tackles, 16 total tackles and 3 touchdowns.

Despite San Marcos looking like an early favorite in the highly competitive Avocado league, only under the Friday night-lights will we know who comes out on top. Tune in to the Prep Pigskin Report Friday at 10:30pm to catch highlights, final scores and so much more.
