Week 7: Sweetwater Red Devils 56, San Ysidro Cougars 0
It was double trouble for the Sweetwater Red Devils. In their second home game they got their second blowout win of the season.
Sweetwater took the victory over the San Ysidro Cougars, 56-0. The result moves the Red Devil record to 2-4 in the season. San Ysidro is still looking for a win, their record now stands at 0-7.
The Red Devils let it burn in the first quarter.
Senior wide receiver Jose Urenda opened the scoreboard with a 9-yard run to the end zone giving Sweetwater the 7-0 lead.
San Ysidro fumbled the ball and it did not take much for Sweetwater to capitalize on that mistake.
Senior Elijah Zuniga recovered the ball on the Cougars’ 30-yard line. Zuniga’s recovery lead to two keys plays for the Red Devils.
Senior quarterback Adrian Gutierrez threw a 30-yard pass caught by sophomore wide receiver Julian Torres putting the home team on the Cougars’ 10-yard line.
It was Urenda’s night and he made known on the field. He completed another carry, this time a 9-yard touchdown run. With more points on the scoreboard, this now gave Sweetwater the lead 14-0.
Senior cornerback Luciano Estupier finished the first quarter with an impressive 82-yard run. The run led him all the way to the Cougar end zone and put seven more points on the Sweetwater scoreboard, 21-0 Red Devils.
Toward the end of the half, the home team snuck in one more touchdown to ensure their lead. This time it was sophomore quarterback Isaiah Atayde with a 15-yard carry to the end zone. After the first half Sweetwater lead 49-0.
Next week Sweetwater will take on Montgomery at home in a non-league game. Will the third time be the charm? Will they be able to extend their home game winning streak?
Will San Ysidro be able to shake off the losses and turn them into wins? Will it be victorious against Southwest (SD) in its rivalry game and reach their first win of the season?
Tune into the PPR next week for more on these two games.
We are halfway through the 2018 high school football season, and it only keeps getting better.
In the South Bay in Week 7, the action takes us to Southwest High School, where the Southwest Red Devils will host the San Ysidro Cougars in a non-league game.
The Red Devils come into the game with their first win of the season which brings them to a 1-4 in non-league play.
The 35-0 win was on the Red Devils’ home field against El Cajon Valley. Being at home gave the boost in confidence to get a victory under their belt. We’ll see if they can get another win as they go into their second home game and their sixth game of the season.
Keep an eye out for two players that will be essential on Friday.
In Week 6, senior free safety and cornerback Luciano Estopier completed 10 carries and 119 rushing yards, ending the night with 125 total yards.
Junior wide receiver Nicolas Salazar kept his eye on the ball, feet on the ground and grip in his hand by completing 30 receiving yards.
These two will need to keep up the same intensity to reach another victory on their home field.
San Ysidro is going into their seventh game of the season with a 0-6 overall all record and 0-1 in league play.
Last week’s away game resulted in 42-7 loss to Francis Parker, however, it did not break the Cougar spirit and they did not give up without a fight. The leadership of upperclassmen pushed the team forward.
Offensively, the team has two senior quarterbacks, Nestor Amaya and Marcus Bowman.
Amaya will be important offensively and defensively. Last week, he completed 51 rushing yards, caught one interception and completed four tackles. Bowman rushed 47-yards and passed for 12 more.
These two will need to be an their “A” game to make their first win a reality.
Fans can’t forget about junior running back Josue Juarez, who had 24 carries and completed 132 rushing yards. With these three young men on the field, the Red Devils will have a head-to-head battle for the win on Friday.
Will the Cougars claw their way into their first victory or will the Red Devils leave them in them into dust? Find out this Friday.
