Santana Sultans 22, San Diego Cavers 21
In Week 5, the Santana Sultans dug deep to overcome a 12-point deficit in the 4th quarter to defeat the San Diego High School Cavers 22-21. The Sultans got off to a flying start when they blocked a Caver punt in the end zone to force a safety. The first half was hard fought and both offenses had trouble clicking. The second half was a different story.
The Cavers and their star quarterback Jushawnte Spann came out firing in the second half. Spann and the Cavers offense finally found their rhythm and the scoreboard showed it. After two well engineered drives that ended in touchdowns, the Cavers found themselves on top of the Sultans 21-9.
The Sultans weren’t done yet though. Sultan quarterback Frankie Gutierrez woke up late in the fourth and fired a strike to James Branson to cut the lead down to 21-16. After a stop on defense, Gutierrez drove his team down the field in the final minutes of the game. With two minutes left in the game Gutierrez put the Sultans on top 22-21 with a 5-yard touchdown run. The game was far from over though.
The Cavers received the ball on their own 40-yard line in the final two minutes of the game. The crowd was going crazy as the Cavers aerial attack moved them into Sultan territory. However, the crowd was stunned into silence when Spann’s ill-advised pass was dramatically intercepted. The Sultans’ record improved to 4-1, while the Cavers fall to 1-4.
Preview: In week 5 the Santana High School Sultans (3-1) travel to the San Diego Cavers (1-3) in a tough non-conference match up. The Sultans are coming off a 41-0 victory against the Montgomery Aztecs. Sultan starting quarterback Frankie Gutierrez picked apart the Aztec defense and scored a combined 6 touchdowns to propel the Sultans to a win. The Sultans also rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns. They will be looking for more of the same against the Cavers this Friday night.
The San Diego Cavers, on the other hand, are struggling at the moment. They are coming off a disappointing loss to the Central High School Spartans. The Spartans ran all over the Cavers racking up 371 yards on their way to a 36-14 win. The Cavers will be determined to bounce back against the Sultans with better performances on both sides of the ball.
Frankie Gutierrez and his Sultans will be looking to dominate the Cavers under the lights on Friday night. However, the Cavers will not lie down easily and it will be an interesting match up.
The Sultans and Cavers will kickoff their week 5 game at 6:30PM Friday night. Can’t make it to the game? Tune in to the Prep Pigskin Report at 10:30PM to catch all the highlights only on KUSI!
