National City Mile of Cars South Bay Game of the Week: Olympian Eagles 41, Santa Fe Christian Eagles 38 (2OT)

In the week one South Bay Game of the Week the Santa Fe Christian Eagles travel to Chula Vista to take on another flock of Eagles…the Olympian Eagles. The former Eagles are looking to avenge a close loss from last year’s match-up…in the end they almost succeed with Olympian pulling off a win in double overtime.

    On the opening kick-off Santa Fe’s Joe Burich takes it all the way into the end zone for a touchdown run of eighty yards.
     Olympian quickly strikes back when Nico Mendoza throws a nice touchdown pass to Isaiah Williams to tie it up at 7.
        Santa Fe takes the lead 21-7 on a short scamper by Jack Miles and a touchdown pass thrown by Michael Linguadoca to Luke Sanders.
    Olympian makes it 21-14 on Nico Mendoza’s second touchdown pass of the first half to Chris Osgood.
     With seconds to go in the half Olympian’s Erik Duarte kicks a 43-yard field goal to make it 24-17 Santa Fe. Then in the third quarter Nico Mendoza throws a touchdown pass to Mikael Tyler to tie the game at 24!
       Minutes later Rashaun Brown’s run up the gut gives Olympian the lead.
     But in the fourth quarter Santa Fe’s Michael Linguadoca runs it in the tie the game at 31. Minutes later Linguadoca hooks up with receiver Luke Sanders to give Santa Fe the lead. But then with two minutes to go Rashaun Brown races over fifty yards for a touchdown which ties the game at 38….we’re going to overtime!
       Erik Duarte ends up kicking a thirty-yard field goal to give Olympian a 41-38 win in double overtime.
      Overall one great high school football game!

PREVIEW

The Week One South Bay Game of the Week features Olympian playing host to Santa Fe Christian.

The Olympian Eagles enter their first game with a record of 8-5 under the fine tutelage of veteran head coach Paul Van Nostrand. The team is lead offensively by Quarterback Nico Mendoza who passed for over 1400 yards last year with 20 touchdown passes and only six picks. Look for Mendoza’s preferred target to be Isaiah Williams who had over thirty receptions last year.

The ‘other’ Eagles begin their season under the leadership of fifth year head coach Jon Wallace. Last year the team went 9-3. Look for Junior Quarterback Michael Linguadoca to be a key part of the offense. Last year as a sophomore he helped pull off a super impressive 31-0 win over Torrey Pines. The Eagles lost 24 players to graduation and have no returning offensive front line players so that could be a challenge.

On a personal note, yours truly, John Soderman, will be beginning my 18th season as a member of the PPR. Only Paul Rudy has more time and grade than me. When I first started there were basically four of us on camera. Now Papa Pig has turned it into a juggernaut…the best high school football show in America they say employing over 100 people.
