Southwest San Diego Raiders 34, Clairemont Chieftains 6

The Southwest (San Diego) Raiders swooped past the Clairemont Chieftains, 34-6, in their Week 6 matchup on Friday night.

It was a first half full of action. After the Chieftans were held the Raiders took over. On their first play from scrimmage quarterback Aaron Hidalgo was picked off by Blaze White of Clairemont.

The Chieftains scored on their very next play when quarterback Ryan Christensen found Donovan Fitzgerald for a 74-yard touchdown. Momentum belonged to the Chieftans but it was short lived when the Raiders took over and didn’t look back.

They answered a touchdown with one of their own when Daniel Belton ran it in from 3 yards out. Right before the first quarter ended, the Raiders scored again, this time it was Jose Chavez pounding it in from 15 yards out.

The Raiders found the end zone for the third time right before the half ended. Belton scored for a second, time this time from 12 yards out. At halftime, the score was 20-6 Raiders.

Southwest came out from the locker room firing again when Hidalgo found Chavez for a 63-yard screen pass for a touchdown.

Finally, Belton thought the first two weren’t enough so, for good measure, he scored a third time to make the score 34-6.

The Raiders of Southwest High move to 3-2, while the Chieftains of Clairemont drop to 0-5 on the season.

The Week 6 matchup between the Southwest (San Diego) Raiders (2-2) and the Clairemont Chieftains (0-4) will be one of the most exciting games in the county.

It is a matchup of two playoff teams from just a year ago. The last time these two schools met was in 2014 when Clairemont won.

For the Raiders, a strong rushing attack has been the key to their two wins on the season.

The ground game is led by Jovan Young, who has rushed for over 453 yards and has five touchdowns. Young also has a touchdown reception of 23 yards.

Young has also been important on the defensive side of the ball, as well, with 12 tackles so far on the season.

The leader on defense has been Daniel Belton, who has 38 tackles on the season through four games.

The Raiders have not had a problem scoring points. Through their first four games, they have scored 147 combined points compared to the 121 points they have given up.

For the Chieftains, it has been Donavan Fitzgerald so far,  as has been turning it up on offense. Fitzgerald had a 37-yard touchdown run in their week 4 loss to Santana.

The Chieftans have also had one of the toughest schedules in the county, the combined record of the teams they have played is 15-4.
