Southwest El Centro Eagles 36, West Hills Wolf pack 17

The Southwest Eagles did not travel all the way from El Centro for nothing. While the Wolf pack put up a great fight, it was the Eagles who came out victorious. The game kicked off with a 19 yard touchdown pass to Grant Hansink, thrown by Southwest QB Cameron Jungers. The Eagles would then score a second time due to a pitch to Tyler Saikhon, but with a blocked extra point leaving the score at 13-0. When West Hills got their second chance on offense, a pass was intercepted by Carlos Ruiz from Southwest. After that it was Tyler Saikhon again with another touchdown for the Eagles with a score of 20-0. When the Wolf pack unfortunately had to punt again, the Eagles gained possession of the ball and handed it to Mr. Saikhon for a 17 yard rushing touchdown with a score of 27-0. The first half ended with a very impressive sack by the Wolf pack’s Alex Leggate. When the second half started, it became very clear that the Pack wasn’t going down without a fight. When the ball was kicked off, Austin Dill of West Hills returned the ball for 70 yards giving the Pack a good start to the second half. West Hills then found themselves on the board with a 12 yard touchdown to Reese Wiltgen, thrown by Jordin Young. This was Young’s first touchdown in a varsity game. After a bit of going back and forth, while Southwest had possession, the Wolf pack was able to recover a fumble by the Eagles. However West Hills ended up having to punt the ball, which resulted in a safety in the Eagles’ favor, now with a score of 29-7. When Southwest regained possession of the ball, Tyler Saikhon ran in his fifth touchdown of the night and did a very impressive Olympic dive into the end-zone. The Pack kept on fighting, which resulted in a 26 yard touchdown to Ryan Jewell, thrown again by Young. West Hills then sealed the game with a field goal, ending the game with a final score of 36-17 in Southwest’s favor. Even though the Wolf pack played hard and fought hard, the Eagles were able to take with them on their long trip home, a very well-fought win.

This Friday take a short trip to Santee and head for the West Hills blue football field as the Southwestern Eagles(0-0) face off against the West Hills Wolf Pack (0-0).

The last time these two teams faced against each other, the Eagles took home a win with a final score of 24-21. This year, the teams are once again opening their seasons with a game against one another. Last year the Wolf pack went 5-6 and ended their season with an unfortunate loss against Bonita Vista in the first round of CIF Division 3 playoffs.

This year the Wolf Pack’s offense is being lead by junior quarterback Jordin Young. This is Young’s first season on varsity football at West Hills so we can only expect the best from him. Last year, the Eagles ended their season also with an unfortunate loss but against La Jolla Country Day in the CIF Division 4 semi-finals.

This year the Eagles’ offense is being lead by senior quarterback Cameron Jungers. Last year, Jungers averaged 109 passing yards per game and 90 rushing yards per game and a total of 17 touchdowns. The scorekeepers may not know what to expect as West Hills is ranked 14th in the CIF San Diego Division 2, while Southwestern is ranked 2nd in the CIF San Diego Division 3.

Catch the game this Friday August 22nd, 2017 at West Hills High School at 7:00 PM, and if you can’t make the game catch the highlights on KUSI at 10:30 PM. Also follow @RedJacketArmy on Twitter for scoring updates.
