Steele Canyon Cougars 28, West Hills Wolf pack 10
On Homecoming night at West Hills High School, the Steele Canyon Cougars crashed the party with a 28-10 victory over the Wolf pack. West Hills started out on the right foot when they recovered a fumbled snap deep in Cougar territory. Not being able to move the ball, the Wolf pack had to settle for a field goal. Both teams traded punts until the second quarter when returning Cougars quarterback, Thomas Fishburne, found Perry Steele in the endzone to give Steele Canyon the 7-3 lead. After a three and out, West Hills punter Cade Weaver had his punt blocked by Robert Whitehead all the way to the endzone where David Lipscomb pounced on it to make the score 14-3. On the ensuing kickoff, the Cougars caught the Wolf pack by surprise when they pooched it perfectly in between the first wave and the kick returners to recover the kick and take over on the Wolf pack 28 yard line. Five plays later the Cougars hit pay dirt with Thomas Fishburne’s second touchdown pass. This time to Nathaniel Gordon for 17 yards. By halftime, the Cougars had a stranglehold on this game by a score of 21-3.
West Hills tried to mount a comeback in the second half when they scored on their first possession of the second half with a Jordin Young to Hunter Gauthier connection. But it was too much Thomas Fishburne on this night. He went on to score a rushing touchdown to put the fininshing touches on this Cougar road win.
PREVIEW:The West Hills Wolf pack will host the Steele Canyon Cougars on Week 8 of the prep season. The Cougars (3-3,0-1) are coming off a home loss to the Helix Highlanders in which they gave up two punt return touchdowns. The Cougars were without starting quarterback Thomas Fishburne in that game and it showed. The Cougars only managed 40 yards of offense in the first half against Helix. They also made costly mistakes against the number 3 ranked team. A fumble and an interception on their side of the field set up two touchdowns. With Fishburne back in the lineup, they will look to improve on those numbers.
The West Hills Wolf pack (5-1,1-0) are coming off their fifth win in a row as they came back to defeat the Valhalla Norseman by a score of 24-21. With under six minutes left in the game, Junior quarterback Jordan Young marched his team 75 yards down the field and he scored the go ahead touchdown with an 11 yard catch. With the win, the Wolf pack keep pace with the aforementioned Helix. If the Wolf pack want to keep their winning streak going, they will have to get past a hungry Cougar team eager to rebound from last week’s loss.
