Sweetwater Red Devils 7, Mar Vista Mariners 28

In week 9 of the Prep Pigskin Report the Mariners of Mar Vista hosted the Sweetwater Red Devils. 

In the first quarter Sweetwater would receive the kickoff and a couple players later cough it up thanks to Hugh "Dirty" Anthony of Mar Vista.

The Mariners wasted no time as the second play from scrimmage was a screen pass to Alejandro Sosa and he took the ball 30 yards for the touchdown, 7-0 MV.

Mar Vista would score again, this time on a 60 yard run for a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. 

The Devils defense would hold the rest of the half as their offense would score once in the first half on a Oscar Gutierrez 10 yard touchdown run.

In the 2nd half on the Mariners 2nd drive of the half, quarterback Micheal Wilson would hook up with wide out Xavier Williams for 40 yard touchdown, 21-7 MV 

In the forth quarter Mar Vistas defense would hold on multiple forth down attempts and seal the game off a 53 yard touchdown run by Noah Berry.

The final 28-7 Mariners.

Mar Vista now improves to 7-1 and 1-0 in the Metro-South Bay League and host Hilltop(3-5) next week on Homecoming night. 

Sweetwater drops to 1-7 and 0-1 in the Metro-South Bay League and host Mater Dei Catholic (7-1) next week. 


In Week 9 of the PPR the Sweetwater Red Devils (1-6) travel south to Imperial Beach to face the Mariners of Mar Vista (6-1).

Mar Vista is having their best season since 2011 when the Mariners went 11-2, won the South Bay League Championship, and lost to Olympian in the Division III semi-finals.

The defense of the Mariners is anchored by the stand out two way players 6’0, 230 pound Hugh "Dirty" Anthony, and 5’9, 254 pound Kaelin Washington. Mar Vista will depend on their senior captains to take control of the line on both sides of the ball.

On the offensive side of the ball the Mariners Khalil Spruill leads the attack at running back. The junior is looking to have a big game on Sweetwaters defense who has allowed 258 points on the season, giving up an averaging 36.85 per game. 

This year the Mariners have played 1D I team out of Las Vegas, Nevada, 1 D II team, 4 D IV teams, and 1 D V team. Their non-league opponents have a cumulative record of 16-34 as their sole loss was to the D II (6-1) Valhalla Norsemen 47-0.

According to calpreps.com, the Mariners average an opponent rating of -8.26 in non-league games. Their 3 league opponent average rating is 6.76.

On the other side, defending Metro-South Bay League Champions Sweetwater has an average opponent rating of 7.17. Their 3 league opponents average a rating 12.1

The Red Devils headed into league having faced 2 D I teams, 1 D II team, 3 D III teams, and 1 D IV team. Their non-league opponents have a cumulative record of 27-23 as their sole win was against the D IV (0-7) Calexico Bulldogs 48-18.

The Sweetwater offense is looking to get on the right track depending on wing back and junior captain Alfredo "Yolo" Ulloa and 6’2, 305 pound Bennie Castillo and 6’3, 287 pound Anthony Mora to anchor their o-line as the Mariners have only given up 103 points, averaging 14.71 points per game.

The Red Devils defense will be relying on defensive back and senior captain Jakari Lowe who has 60 tackles on the season. Mar Vista has scored 193 points, averaging 27.57 per game.
