University City Centurions 56, Serra Conquistadors 6

Every team likes to put on a good show at their Homecoming game, but, unfortunately, that wasn’t the case for Serra High tonight.  On this Friday the 13th, Serra High’s Conquistadors, (now 2-5) may have had some bad “juju” as they suffered a devastating 56-3 loss to the now 6-1 University City Centurions.  University City’s win sets their record at 1-0 in the division, giving them plenty of momentum going into next week.

Serra’s Quarterback Timmy Zebroski had a rough night, throwing 4 interceptions—3 of which resulted in opposing touchdowns. The first notable play of the night happened when Serra’s drive was interrupted by a tipped Zebroski pass in the end zone that somehow found its way into the hands of University City’s Casey Granfors.  Granfors managed to run it back 105 yards for a defensive touchdown (14-0).

Serra’s third try to get something going resulted in a field goal, bringing the score to 14-3.  A quick pass from quarterback Gunnar Gray to Tariq Jefferson took the score to 21-3, U.C.  Serra’s opening drive of the second quarter resulted in another interception, setting up the 27 yard pass from Gray to Rico for six.  That’s all University City will get on that drive, though, as Serra special teams manage to come up with a big block on the point after attempt.

Later, Gray hit Granfors for a 76 yard touchdown and a successful 2-point conversion, bumping U.C to a 35-3 lead.  A touchdown run by E’lonie Rico, followed by another successful 2-point conversion made it a 43-3 game.  Another U.C touchdown in the third quarter sent the score to 50-3, with the final touchdown being set-up by another interception snagged by the Centurions’ Jonuz Dauti.  U.C’s Marcel Patterson ran in the 56-3 final score at the end of the third quarter.

PREVIEW: This Friday night at 6:30 PM, just a hop across the freeway from KUSI headquarters, the 2-4 Serra High Conquistadors will defend their territory from the powerhouse offense of the 5-1 University City Centurions.

University City’s conference run begins on Friday against the Conquistadors.  Currently 0-1 in the division, after losing to Patrick Henry High School last week, Serra High needs to snap their four game losing streak and get a win.  Can the Conquistadors conquer the Centurions or, will University City take home their first conference win this season?

If you haven’t watched him play, be sure to keep an eye out for Centurion Junior, Casey Granfors.  Casey has been a spectacle to watch this season in the wide receiver position.  With 7 touchdowns, 502 yards, and 31 receptions this season, it’s no doubt this young man is a favorite target for Sophomore Quarterback Gunnar Gray.  Gunnar has thrown for over 1,300 yards, racking up 15 touchdowns.

Conquistador Senior, middle line-backer and leading tackler, Kieve Curry, is going to have to put the pressure on the Centurion offense.  He has 34 solo tackles, 37 assisted tackles and averages 11.8 tackles per game. Quarterback Timmy Zebroski will have his pick between 3 powerful receiving play makers: B.G. Gambles (sr.), TJ Zilvestri (sr.), Chance Cannon (sr.).  If Zebroski can’t find an open man, be ready to watch him run.
