Vista Panthers 0 at La Costa Canyon Mavericks 13

It was a beautiful homecoming night in Carlsbad as only one touchdown and two field goals were all the points scored in this game; LCC would take the win 13-0.

The game started off with Silver Pigskin Watchlister Tanner Clark throwing a 35 yard pass to running back Zach Goodkin. Wait… running back? Yes everyone Zach can run AND catch.

Later on in the first quarter Tanner and Zach make another hookup. Zach runs this time, for 63 yards for the only touchdown of the night.

Seconds left in the half kicker Jake Koehnke would kick a beautiful 45 yard field goal making the final score of the game 13-0.

Next week La Costa Canyon will have their bye, but the week after they will travel to El Camino for their first league game.  El Camino has not lost a game yet so we will see if this LCC offense will be able to score some points against this tough El Camino defense.

Vista will also be getting some time to recover and rest next week as they also have their bye. After the bye they face Del Norte at home. This will also be Vista’s first league game of the season.

Preview: This Friday, the Vista Panthers (1-3) will travel to La Costa Canyon (3-1) to take on an exciting Mavericks team.

It’s about that time of the year again …homecoming. LCC has been celebrating all week long during, “Spirit Week.” From “Decades Day” to “Tacky Tourist Thursday,” the Mavericks will cap it off loud and proud during the game on Friday.

The Panthers are trying to regroup after a tough loss against Carlsbad. Their offense has been a bit stagnant lately, scoring just 6 points in the last two games.

That doesn’t mean they don’t have the ability to score. In Week 2 against Paloma Valley, the Panthers scored 55 points and tallied up 313 yards in the first half alone.

La Costa Canyon is coming off an impressive win against Rancho Bernardo. The Broncos were ranked #5 on the “Prep Pigskin Report’s Top 9” last week.

Junior quarterback and Silver Pigskin watch list player Tanner Clark threw for 175 yards and scored a pair of rushing touchdowns. Running back Zachary Goodkin also had a great night. Goodkin ran for 128 yards on 16 carries.

The Maverick’s are on a roll. In the last three games, the Maverick’s have scored a total of 116 points and held opponents to under 21 per game.

When asked what La Costa Canyon has been doing to pull off these incredible wins, senior Ty Engel said, “The execution has been great, which has led to flashes of big time success in all three phases of our game. If we don’t get in the way of ourselves and clean up our pass defense, teams will have a really hard time beating us this year.”

Playing any team on its homecoming night is tough. It may be tough, but it’s not impossible. With 15 returning seniors, the Panthers will really look for their leadership. This would be Vista’s first victory over the Mavericks since 2009.

Will Vista be able to spoil La Costa Canyon’s Homecoming, or will the Mavericks come away with their 4th win of the season? Watch the Prep Pigskin Report Friday at 10:30 to find out the final score from this game and many more around the county.
