Vista 15, Carlsbad 13

Before this game who would have thought that these long time rivals would have such a cagey match. The scoring was far and few between on the night because of the stubborn defensive displays on both ends.

Vista Panthers came into this game with back-to-back losses, hoping that this game would allow them to truly prove themselves after a slow start to the season. The Panthers’ got off to a good start with a 25-yard field goal late in the first quarter, putting them 3-0 up. This would be one of three FG’s for Chris Stalter on the night, who would prove to become a Panthers’ hero. In the second quarter Stalter put the ball through the uprights from30 yardss out, his second on the night. Going into the half the game was tight, as both defenses would not budge.

In the beginning of the second half, the Carlsbad Lancers fought back, as Dylan Rutledge ran the ball 15 yards for a TD, putting them just a point above their opposition. Just as the Lancers built confidence, Ryan Lasua ran the ball back for a stunning 60-yard punt return, putting his team back in the drivers seat. The third quarter was drawing to close when Jackson Whitteker got a 6-yard QB keeper TD to put the Lancers up 13 to 12.

The game was drawing to a close, the Panthers were punting, and in an instant they pulled a fake punt play as Nate Johnson ran the ball for a first down. Within the blink of an eye there was a second left on the clock and the Panthers were going for a last gasp field goal. It was do or die, as this play would determine the game. Chris Stalter stepped up to the plate and sent the ball sailing through the uprights for a beautiful 34-yard field goal, wining the game for his team. Panthers 15-13 Lancers!

Stalter proved to be the Panthers’ ace in the hole as he put his team on the board twice before winning the game with the last kick of the game. On the other end, after a great defensive display from the Lancers, it would prove to not be enough as they lost on the night. Tight match with an exceedingly dramatic ending.
