Poway Titans 31, Westview Wolverines 6
Poway High School’s (6-0, 3-0) undefeated reign stays in tact after taking down Westview High School (1-6, 0-3) Friday night in a 31-6 victory. The Titan’s are currently ranked No. 7 on KUSI’s Top 9, and continue to show why they deserve to stay on the prestigious list.
Other than tonight’s game just being part of Palomar Conference play, it was also a game where a lot of history lingered on the field. The Wolverine’s Head Coach Kyle Anderson is an alumni of Poway, who graduated in the Class of 1998. He also received his first coaching job there in 2004 under the head of Damian Gonzalez. As Anderson headed back to his alma mater last night, he faced Coach Gonzalez and his brother.
The Titan’s first points of the game came from Kicker Mathew Blackburn. The 6’1 senior drilled a field goal in from 28-yards out, making the score 3-0.
Jared Adelman of Poway High scored a couple minutes later after a big defensive effort by the Titans, which got them the ball back.
After a blocked punt against the Wolverines, Adelman added to the one-sided score again with a 16-yard return to make the score 17-0 heading into the second quarter.
Adelman scored his third touchdown of the game in the third quarter after finding a gap in Westview’s defense, racking up 38-yards on the run. The senior broke 1000 yards rushing on the season during Friday nights game.
Westview was able to answer back with a 25-yard pass from Beau Nelson to Jackson Nau, cutting Poway’s lead 24-6 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Wolverine’s showed some grit in the fourth quarter, but Titan junior Garrett Van Nostrand sealed the deal for Poway with a 42-yard touchdown run.
The final score was 31-6 Poway Titans.
Westview travels to Rancho Bernardo High School (7-0, 3-0) next week, in hopes of racking in their first league win of the season. Poway takes their undefeated record on the road over to Vista High School (3-4, 2-2) for Week 9. Make sure to tune into The Prep Pigskin Report next Friday Night at 10:30 PM for the results of not only these two games, but all the games throughout San Diego County.
PREVIEW: Week 8 of The Prep Pigskin brings you a Palomar League match-up between the Westview Wolverines (1-5, 0-2) and the Poway Titans (6-0, 2-0). The Wolverines are coming off a close loss to Ramona High School last week, where the Bulldogs pulled out with a 35-21 victory. KUSI’s #7 ranked Wolverines remain undefeated on the season and are hoping to continue their perfect season throughout the rest of league play.
Westview head coach Kyle Williams is in his first year with the Wolverines, after replacing previous head coach Mike Woodward. Williams is an alumni of Poway High School and was also the Titan’s first defensive coordinator under the head of Damien Gonzalez from 2004-2007. In their 2007 season, the Titans went undefeated and won Poway’s first CIF championship.
Coach Gonzalez is still the head coach over at Poway, so it’s evident we will be seeing some friendly competition Friday night.
A player to watch out for this week is Westview running back AJ Leonard. The senior was named one of the Top 3 running backs for the North County, and was also named to CalHiSport.com’s pre-season Second Team. Poway running back Jared Adelman also made the list.
The Wolverines will be playing without defensive end Travis Allen and line backer Kquamei Wolford Friday night due to injuries. There is currently no injury report on the Titans.
Make sure to head on out to Poway High School Friday night to watch the undefeated Titans take on Westview High School. Kick-off is at 7:00 PM, but if you can’t make it, make sure to tune into KUSI’s The Prep Pigskin Report at 10:30 PM to catch the highlights of not only this game, but all the games throughout San Diego County.
