Prices plummet at the pump
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Gas prices have not been this low in almost four years, but are the new low prices really making a difference in the lives of San Diegans?
Gas prices have dropped now in San Diego, 47 days in a row. The last time gas prices were this low was back in December of 2010.
The prices at the pump are putting more pennies into San Diegans’ pockets.
The Arco gas station in Poway, which had gas prices as low as $2.85 a gallon, had lines of drivers trying to fill up while saving up on gas.
“I have family down south and friends who moved up north so now I don’t feel that broke driving up and down all the time,” said Jennifer Nguien.
According to the Automobile Club of Southern California, right now, the average price per gallon of regular gas is $3.15.
A week ago, it was $3.22, and last year at this time, the average price was $3.61 a gallon.
“The reason the fuel is so low right now is the oil prices have declined and the wholesale gas also declined put pressure on fuel prices,” said Michael Hoshaw.
Good news for folks like Darren Loftin. He’s a college student.
“I only work part time because of class its money in my pocket, a lot money in gas tank means a lot actually,” said Darren.
Right now, gas prices are cheapest in Poway, Escondido, and San Marcos.
“We don’t know how far the prices are going to drop but we expect barring anything unforeseen with a refinery issue, prices will continue to decline,” said Michael.
He means through the holidays, which may translate to more cars on the roadways as we move towards the end of 2014.
“I do a lot of driving unfortunately I have to fill up more than I like, so when prices are low it’s a blessing,” said David Hood.
The stark reality for some, it is not about money for extra Christmas presents, it is about food for the family.
Some experts say prices are expected to go right back up in the new year.
