Rainbow flag to fly above Hillcrest intersection

The San Diego City Council has unanimously approved the planned
installation of a 65-foot pole in Hillcrest that will fly a rainbow flag, against the recommendation of the Planning Commission.

The 12-foot-by-18-foot flag bearing the gay pride symbol would fly in a
median at the intersection of Normal Street and University Avenue.

The Planning Commission voted 4-2 three weeks ago to forward the
proposal to the City Council, with a recommendation that it be denied. The City Council has the ultimate authority on land use
issues.

Among the objections to the project were its height, and its location in
a busy intersection. Also questioned was whether a cultural symbol should fly
above public land.
