Randall Reeves tackles year long “Figure 8 Journey” solo
He started OpenTable, the reservation app, and now he will be the first person to sail the “figure 8” around all of North and South America solo.
Randall Reeves visited the studio on Tuesday to talk about his upcoming Figure 8 Journey and the many challenges and wonders of traversing the ocean.
“I’ve been sailing since I was a kid and have always been fascinated with deep ocean solo journeys. I used to “borrow” my fathers small boat when he went on business trips, and I’d explore the rivers and estuaries around San Francisco Bay by myself,” said Reeves.
The Figure 8 Voyage is an attempt to circumnavigate both American continents and Antarctica in one season, alone. Departing from San Francisco in the fall of this year, Reeves will sail all the way to the bottom of the world, to the base of South America, circle Antarctica, sail all the way up the Atlantic to the top of the world, and return home to San Francisco–all in one year, solo. The total route is some 40,000 miles and will take a year to complete.
The ocean around Antarctica is known to sailors as the Roaring 40s and Screaming 50s because, even in summer, storms are common. A loop around the world via the south is considered the Everest of sailing.
