Rancho Buena Vista Longhorns 23, Vista Panthers 22
The City of Vista rivalry was in full force tonight! As with most rivalry games, the Vista Panthers and visiting Rancho Buena Vista Longhorns brought their A game. Everyone on the field can truthfully say they gave their all. Despite Vista controlling the first half, the RBV Longhorns stormed back to shock the home crowd and win 23-22 in overtime.
Vista’s defense came out of the gate ready to go by breaking up a fourth down in their own territory early on. Shortly after, Tyler Stacier took a reverse to the house for the Panthers making it 7-0 Vista. The second quarter saw more dominance for Vista thanks to a 10 yard touchdown run by Vavega Sialoi and a bad snap by RBV that resulted in a safety. Mathew Llerenas sneaked into the end zone to score, giving Rancho Buena Vista 7 points before halftime; that’s when the game’s momentum completely shifted.
Thanks to Mathew Llerenas and running back Dorian Richardson, the Longhorns completed an impressive comeback. A missed field goal by Vista sent the game into overtime and the Longhorns slid by with a 23-22 win in an incredible turn of events. RBV hopes to improve to 3-1 against Mission Bay next week while Vista heads back to the drawing board to prepare for Mt Carmel. PREVIEW: The 2017 high school football season has been full of incredible match-ups and shocking surprises, and we’re only three weeks in! This week promises more of the same. One of the exciting games to look forward to is between the Rancho Buena Vista Longhorns and the Vista Panthers.
Vista was able to improve their record to 1-1 by coming out on top in last week’s defensive battle with the San Pasqual Golden Eagles. The Panthers took the 14-7 victory by shutting out the Golden Eagle in the second half of the game. Led by lineman Isaac Tinoisamoa and defensive back Desmond Taua, the Vista defense will continue to stress out opposing offenses.
The visiting Rancho Buena Vista Longhorns were unable to pull off a win in their previous bout. They stayed neck in neck with the Westview Wolverines early on before ultimately succumbing to a 28-0 defeat. If Longhorn’s quarterback Matthew Llerenas and running back Dorian Richardson can both have a strong night, then the rest of the offense will be able to bounce back.
Both squads understand that even though this game is early in the season, it is still a critical one to win. The victor will walk away with a 2-1 record while the loser has to rebound from a 1-2 start. These schools are no strangers to each other; they’ve been playing every year for over a decade now with Vista taking the last three contests. Tune into Prep Pigskin Report this Friday to find out which team gets the win!
