Rep. Juan Vargas holds public forum on immigration

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — Rep. Juan Vargas (D-Chula Vista) held a forum Monday to give District 51 constituents the opportunity to ask questions and voice their concerns about immigration.

The forum featured a panel of experts on Citizenship & Naturalization, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program, Deported Veterans, and Immigrant Rights. Panelists included: Nathan Fletcher, Marine Corps Combat Veteran, UCSD Professor and Former California State Assemblymember; Tammy Lin, American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) Chair and Immigration Attorney; Matt Holt, AILA Member and Immigration Attorney; Esmeralda Flores, Immigrants’ Rights and Binational Affairs Advocate, ACLU of San Diego; and Alanna Ow, Director, District 24 for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

“A special thank you to everyone who attended tonight’s Immigration Forum,” said Rep. Vargas. “We had a productive and informative discussion on issues surrounding immigration and deported veterans. And thank you to the panelists for taking the time to answer important questions from my constituents.”

Recently, Rep. Vargas introduced a Deported Veterans Bill Package. This bill package will prevent veterans from being deported and help veterans that have been deported get access to the medical service they deserve. The Immigrant Veterans Eligibility Tracking System (I-VETS) Act of 2017, Healthcare Opportunities for Patriots in Exile (HOPE) Act of 2017, and Naturalization at Training Sites (NATS) Act of 2017 are part of this legislative package.
