Rescued seal pup dies

A day-old harbor seal pup rescued Tuesday from the Children's Pool died Wednesday at SeaWorld San Diego.

Kelly Terry of SeaWorld said the pup weighed only 7 pounds, when most are 16 pounds, so the abandoned seal might have been born prematurely.

SeaWorld staffers responded to calls from people worried about the undersized pup.

“Typically, we try to wait a little while on a young pup to see if its mother tries to come back,” Terry said.

She said this one appeared to be injured from occasional sea gull attacks, so it was brought back to the park to warm up and be given nutrients. However, the pup died during the early-morning hours, she said.

A necropsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
