Robbery suspect arrested after repeat robbery attempt

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A man who allegedly robbed an Egger Highlands cell phone business Tuesday was soon in custody, but not before making a failed attempt to repeat the crime at a fast-food restaurant a few miles away, police said.

The heist at the Cricket Wireless store in the 1800 block of Coronado Avenue was reported shortly after noon, according to the San Diego Police Department.

About a half-hour later, while officers were investigating the holdup, another robbery was reported at a Church's Chicken outlet on Del Sol Boulevard in Otay Mesa, SDPD Detective Gary Hassen said.

Within minutes, a witness spotted seeing a suspicious-looking man behind the eatery, stripping off some of his outer clothing. Patrol personnel arrived in the area shortly afterward and arrested the suspect, whose name was not immediately available, according to Hassen.

The alleged bandit was taken to an emergency room for treatment of a cut to his head before being booked into county jail. It was unclear how the man suffered the injury, the lieutenant said.

Administrators at Montgomery Middle School, just north of the restaurant, kept all students locked indoors for about 45 minutes as a precaution while police were searching the neighborhood for the robber.
