SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – He’s been a part of rock and roll royalty since the 1980’s. Songs like “Heart of Rock and Roll” and “Hip to be Square” have been rocking our radios and rolling off our lips for decades. Now, it’s time to rewind and revisit some of the greatest songs ever written.

The Old Globe Theatre in San Diego is staging the world premier of “The Heart of Rock and Roll” the musical.

“Everybody is walking around singing the songs, it’s so cool, it’s like as a writer it’s really fun to see that your songs live on, ya know”, says the rocker himself Huey Lewis.

Clearly, he wrote some of the most memorable songs of the 80’s. The kind songs where everyone knows the words and gladly sings them out loud.

“This is just wonderful. It’s like a bonus on life. When I wrote these songs, I never envisioned they would be made into a musical”, says Lewis at the Old Globe.

“Actually, if you listen to those songs. It’s like they were written for Broadway. They have that poppy sound that just get’s people off their seats”, says show Director Barry Edelstein.

While his music and his passion will be on display, Huey Lewis himself will not, “My life is great, but it would be better if I had my hearing. I haven’t sung in 6-months and I cancelled all my shows. I’ve seen the best doctors and they still can’t figure it out,. Other than that, everything is just fine”, says Lewis.

“The Heart of Rock and Roll” world premier is September 6th in San Diego.
