Routine traffic stop turns into low-speed chase in Alpine

ALPINE (KUSI) — A driver is in the hospital Tuesday after a routine traffic stop turned into an unusual low-speed chase.

A Sheriff’s deputy attempted to pull over the driver in the Alpine area for a traffic violation late Tuesday but police realized the man had called El Cajon dispatch with suicidal comments, according to Sheriff’s Sgt. Rey Lyyjoki.

The man refused Sheriff’s orders to pull over and a low-speed chase ensued. Deputies pursued the driver for about 5 miles before a spike strip punctured three of the car’s tires, Lyyjoki said. Once the car stopped, the man continued to refuse orders to remove himself from the vehicle.

The driver was removed from the vehicle and taken to the hospital to be treated for possible injuries and evaluated, the sergeant said.
