Sad News: San Diego Zoo Lion M’bari peacefully passes away at 15 years old

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – San Diego Zoo staff are sad to announce that the Zoo’s male lion, M’bari, passed away today, May 22, 2019. M’bari was 15 years old and had been under veterinary care for some time due to age-related medical issues. In recent days, his condition had steadily worsened, despite attempts by animal care staff to modify his habitat to make him more comfortable. This morning, because of his worsening quality of life, animal care staff made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize him.

M’bari was a well-known resident of the San Diego Zoo—a majestic lion that guests could often see lounging with his mate, Etosha, in their habitat at the Harry and Grace Steele Elephant Odyssey. His early morning and late afternoon roars could be heard throughout the entire Zoo.

KUSI posted a video of a trainer feeding M’Bari to our Facebook page just one month ago. Check it out.

M'Bari passes away at the San Diego Zoo

RIP M’Bari. The San Diego Zoo's lion passed away today. We wanted to #repost this video of him that was posted in April. M’Bari was 15 years old, content & very happy living at the San Diego Zoo w/his mate Etosha who he’s was with since they were a few months old. They were very strongly bonded. Any doubts – look at the sweet look on his face as he looked at his keeper. He loved the adoration of his ‘fans’ & to give them a thrill by roaring. ❤️????❤️ ???? ❤️????❤️
