San Diego bicycle district plan to be unveiled

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A plan to improve and encourage bicycling in the city of San Diego's Business Improvement Districts is scheduled to be unveiled Thursday .

The announcement will be made by the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, the San Diego Business Improvement District Council and Councilman Todd Gloria.

The plan will be modeled on a pilot-program in Long Beach, where residents are encouraged to ride two wheels instead of four on short trips. Organizers believe the result will be less traffic congestion, fewer parking problems and increased economic activity.

The districts are a 20-year-old collaboration between the city of San Diego and small businesses to help promote their neighborhood stores and special events. Many of the 17 BIDs in San Diego are in older parts of town.
