San Diego Blood Bank appoints new CEO

The San Diego Blood Bank announced the appointment of a biotech executive as its new CEO on Monday.

David Wellis, president of San Diego-based BioAlta LLC, is replacing longtime blood bank head Ramona Walker, who is retiring. He was previously president and CEO of GenVault Corp. and was in charge of product marketing at Illumina Inc.

“Dr. Wellis brings an extraordinary, and unique, background in life sciences including scientific research, strategic leadership and management acumen, much grown here in San Diego and (the) California community, over his more than 25 years of experience,” said Shawn Hagerty, president of the blood bank's board of directors.

Wellis' contract officially begins next week, but he's already been working for the blood bank informally for a couple of days, according to a spokeswoman.

Walker was employed by the San Diego Blood Bank for 33 years, the last dozen as CEO. She announced in January that she would retire this month.
