CORONADO: Carrier Strike Group One gets new commander

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – Rear Adm. David Steindl has assumed command of Carrier
Strike Group One, which is centered around the Coronado-based aircraft
carrier USS Carl Vinson, the Navy reported Friday.

Steindl replaced Rear Adm. T.K. Shannon in a change-of-command ceremony
Thursday aboard the Vinson while at sea.

Under Shannon, the strike group deployed once to the Middle East and
western Pacific and took part in exercises with vessels of other nations.

“It has been my honor and privilege to work with the outstanding men
and women of Carrier Strike Group One over the past two years,” Shannon said.
“Time and again you displayed the utmost professionalism and perseverance,
ensuring we were always trained and ready to deploy whenever called upon by our

Shannon is headed for Washington, D.C., to take charge of the Navy's
Military Sealift Command. He was awarded the Legion of Merit during the

Steindl was most recently commander of the Naval Service Training
Command in Great Lakes, Ill. He has also served as the commander of Destroyer
Squadron 7 and was the sea combat commander during the Ronald Reagan Strike
Group's maiden deployment to the Arabian Gulf.

CSG-1 also includes the squadrons of Carrier Air Wing 17, guided-missile
cruiser USS Bunker Hill and guided-missile destroyer USS Halsey.
