San Diego completes first half of drone pilot program

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The city of San Diego announced Friday that it has reached the halfway point in a pilot program on drone use.

Last year, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Transportation announced San Diego as one of 10 cities to participate in the drone integration program. Since then, the city has completed nearly 650 flights with 17 different types of drones.

The FAA hopes to use information from these flights to develop new regulations on low-altitude drone use.

The drones will be used for delivering packages, infrastructure inspection and acting as first responders.
