San Diego Diocesan Mental Health Ministry Network
In 2015, the diocese launched the San Diego Diocesan Mental Health Ministry Network with the goals of removing the stigma around mental illness and fully including people facing this challenge in parish life.
The San Diego Diocese is a leader in responding to mental illness in the Catholic Church.
From 2015 to 2017, some 24 San Diego County parishes attended training and established their own Mental Health Ministries in English and Spanish.
At each of the parishes, ministry team members serve as “prayerful companions” for fellow parishioners experiencing mental illness.
They do not provide professional counsel, but offer assistance in locating mental health services, walk with them through the treatment process, and provide parish-wide education about mental illness.
