Carlsbad man suspected of DUI surrounded by police for hours

CARLSBAD (KUSI) — A 37-year-old Encinitas man was taken into custody Friday after allegedly crashing his van into a tree while under the influence of drugs.

For hours, Kirk Meyer Hansen sat in his white Ford E-350 van as California State Parks officers surrounded him, officials said.

The van crashed into a tree alongside Carlsbad Boulevard near Avenida Encinas shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday and enlisted help from police, Carlsbad police officials said.

According to park officers, the man was incoherent and attempted to move the van, prompting them to retreat to their vehicles as a precaution.

Officers attempted to coax Hansen out of the van for three hours, but he refused. Ultimately, officers had to “forcibly remove” the man from the vehicle and place him under arrest on suspicion of DUI and hit-and-run, police said.
