Man shot getting into his car in East Village

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — Police were searching for the man who shot and killed a San Diego man in East Village Wednesday morning.  

23-year-old Derion White was shot while getting into a car on the corner of Island Ave. and 17th St. just after midnight Wednesday, San Diego police said. Two people were inside the vehicle at the time.

White was found by police unconscious suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body, San Diego police said. Medics attempted to save White but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect was believed to have fired two rounds at White, one of which struck him, according to police, before running from the scene. The suspect was described as a thin man about 6 feet tall. He was believed to be wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and dark pants and may have had dreadlocks.

Homicide detectives continued to collect evidence at the scene.
