Update: Man killed in fiery 3-car-crash on I-8 identified

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — Wednesday — The man who died early Sunday during a fatal crash on the I-8 was identified Wednesday as 35-year-old Ulises Plascencia-Roque.

5/1/2016 — A male in his 40’s was pronounced dead on the scene of a fatal crash on Interstate 8 early Sunday morning. A 1999 BMW 323 four-door vehicle collided with the center divider while driving eastbound, causing the car to roll over across the freeway, according to Sgt. Brent Lowry with the California Highway Patrol. The driver was ejected from the car and was killed in the accident.

Two more vehicles crashed into the BMW, causing it to catch fire and burn while overturned on the freeway. One of the parties was transported to a hospital with minor injuries, while the other declined medical attention, according to Lowry. The cars that struck the BMW both sustained major damage.

The accident occurred near the Waring Rd. exit, next to San Diego State University. Eastbound I-8 was shut down from 5:05 a.m. for approximately six hours as authorities investigated and cleared the scene.

The driver of the BMW is not suspected to have been traveling at excessive speeds. It’s unclear whether drugs and alcohol were involved and results are pending a medical examiner’s report.
