Car pool lanes, new onramp opening on Interstate 805

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — Commuters travelling on Interstate 805 may have some new relief with the opening of additional carpool lanes and direct access ramps. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Thursday morning, celebrating the $119 million project in San Diego’s Golden Triangle.

Four miles of carpool lanes spanning from state Route 52 to Mira Mesa Blvd., and a south-facing direct access ramp at Carroll Canyon Rd. were added. The ramp will allow carpools, permitted clean air vehicles and motorcycles a direct exit and entrance to the carpool lanes without needing to cut through the interstate’s traffic.

The project aims to ease congestion in an area that’s heavy with residents as well as many high tech and life sciences companies. It was funded by the TransNet half-cent sales tax, along with state and federal money. The new additions to the interstate will be open for the public in about a week, according to the San Diego Association of Governments.
