Navy Secretary to discuss women in combat at Camp Pendleton
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Although restrictions on military services based on gender were lifted in January, some Marine Corps leaders have tried to keep infantry and combat jobs closed to women.
Navy Secretary Ray Mabus has sided with Defense Secretary Ash Carter, who overruled gender-based restrictions in December of last year. Tuesday, he will address the leaders that oppose him at Camp Pendleton.
300 leaders from the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force will hear Mabus discuss integration plans and his expectations for the future of women in combat.
He will be met with hesitation though, as many believe that gender-combined military units are not as effective as male-only units. Women must still meet the same training and standards as men to fight in the field and Mabus believes that they should be able to serve.
