San Diego Sheriff’s Deputy involved in Vista shooting; 1 injury reported

VISTA (KUSI) — An alleged gang member was gravely wounded Thursday afternoon when two deputies shot him following a vehicle and foot chase in Vista.

The patrol personnel tried to pull over the 33-year-old felon on an outstanding warrant related to weapons violations shortly before 12:30 p.m., according to sheriff’s officials.

The suspect, who had a female passenger riding with him, refused to yield and led the deputies on a brief road chase that ended when he crashed the black Lexus he was driving in the 100 block of Bronze Way, just west of North Melrose Drive, Lt. Kenneth Nelson told reporters.

The man then jumped out of the car and ran off. Deputies chased him down a narrow walkway between two homes, where he confronted them, prompting them to open fire, according to Nelson.

Medics took the suspect, whose name was not immediately available, to a hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition, the lieutenant said.

No other injuries were reported.

The young woman who had been riding in the Lexus was taken into custody for questioning.
