Former Vista Pop Warner Football and Cheer treasurer pleads guilty to embezzling $100,000 from organization

VISTA (KUSI) — The former treasurer for Vista Pop Warner Football and Cheer pleaded guilty to five felonies Thursday in court, including grand theft and identity theft in an embezzlement scandal. Rachel Marie Owens embezzled over $100,00 from the organization’s accounts.

Owens also admitted to the allegation that the theft was more than $65,000, Deputy District Attorney Anna Winn said. Owens’ sentencing hearing is scheduled for May 10. She is expected to be sentenced to a year in a jail, along with needing to pay $114,395 in restitution.

Owens was a math teacher at Guajome Park Academy and held her position as treasurer for Vista Pop Warner Football and Cheer from Oct. 2013 thru Nov. 2015. The sheriff’s department’s Cyber Financial Crimes Unit opened their investigation on the embezzlement around the time she left the organization, according to Lt. Greg Rylaarsdam.

A warrant was issued for her arrest in February and she was initially taken into custody on Feb. 24.
