San Diego Raiders? Could it actually happen?
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – To many long-time Chargers fans, having to say “San Diego Raiders” out loud would be the unthinkable. They would rather have no team than to have the raiders call San Diego home.
The hatred and the rivalry here is deep.
The raiders franchise right now is up the air.
They have no lease at the Oakland Coliseum. In fact, right now they don’t know where they will be playing this upcoming season.
The organization is still waiting to see what the Chargers decide. If the chargers leave, the feeling among NFL insiders is that the Raiders could very well be targeting a move to San Diego.
In an interview with a local San Diego news outlet, former San Diego Chargers punter Darren Bennett put on a retro Marcus Allen Raiders jersey and challenged San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer to make that move happen.
He claimed that the gesture, which came at the end of his interview, was really as a joke. “If I put on a Jacksonville Jaguars jersey on nobody would have said anything,” he said. “I wanted to create a passionate conversation within San Diego to show Dean (Spanos) and Mayor Faulconer that if the Chargers go to Los Angeles, we’ll be fine.”
He certainly created passion, a lot of which was negative. Bennett added that he’s, “had some over-the-top comments as well which I didn’t appreciate some of those, but that comes with the passion. The passion is good, bad or ugly.”
