Man allegedly fires crossbow at deputies, found dead inside Santee residence

SANTEE (KUSI) — 6:35 p.m. — A man who allegedly shot a crossbow Friday at deputies investigating a fight at his Santee home, prompting them to return fire, was found dead inside the residence following a several-hour SWAT standoff.

The domestic dispute in the 9900 block of Woodglen Vista Drive was reported shortly after 2 p.m., according to sheriff’s officials.

A woman involved in the disturbance left the residence unharmed, but a 31-year-old man holed up inside and refused repeated orders to exit and surrender, authorities said.

During the standoff, the man shot several arrows from a crossbow toward deputies, and they returned fire with their service guns, according to broadcast reports.

The special weapons and tactics personnel took up positions around the home while deputies tried to persuade the suspect to give himself up, officials said.

Shortly before 6 p.m., the SWAT team sent a camera-equipped robotic device into the residence, finding the man’s body. His cause of death was not immediately clear.

No other injuries were reported.

6:00 p.m. — Jan Caldwell of the San Diego Sheriff’s Department confirmed that the suspect involved in the standoff has died.

It was unclear if he died from self-inflicted injuries or if he was shot by law enforcement. 

The medical examiner’s office is heading to the scene to determine the cause of death.

4:28 p.m. — A man holed up inside an East County home Friday afternoon following a domestic dispute and refused to surrender to deputies, leading to a standoff with a SWAT team.

The family disturbance in the 9900 block of Woodglen Vista Drive in Santee was reported shortly after 2 p.m., according to sheriff’s officials.

After the suspect, whose name was not immediately available, refused repeated orders to come out of the house and speak with patrol personnel, a special weapons and tactics squad was called in.

The standoff continued into the late afternoon.

4:15 p.m. — San Diego Sheriff’s Deputies and SWAT were called to the 9900 block of Woodglen Vista Drive Friday afternoon due to police activity.

The nature of the call was immediately unknown, but SDSO asked residents to stay indoors.
