San Diego’s plan to use a CCA to purchase electricity could affect taxpayers

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The City of San Diego is working to establish a plan to purchase electricity on the open market rather than using San Diego Gas & Electric as a sole provider of power.

The plan calls for the County of San Diego to form a Community Choice Aggregation. CCA consists of nonprofit agencies that buy and/or generate electricity and sell it to consumers at lower prices. Therefore, the county would be competing with SDG&E.

Haney Hong with the San Diego County Taxpayers Association stopped by to discuss the potential risk for taxpayers if the city uses a CCA for power.
