San Miguel fire chief seriously injured in motorcycle accident

ESCONDIDO (CNS) – The chief of the San Miguel Consolidated Fire
Protection District is recovering in a hospital from serious injuries he
suffered in a weekend motorcycle crash in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

Augie Ghio, 60, was riding with a friend when he lost control of his Harley-
Davidson shortly before 9:30 a.m. Saturday on State Route 78, east of county
Route S2 in the Ocotillo Wells area, according to the California Highway
Patrol.

Medics airlifted him to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where he
was listed in serious condition, said fire district information officer Leonard
Villarreal. The spokesman declined to disclose the nature of the chief's
injuries and said it was unclear how long he would have to remain hospitalized.

Ghio, who has headed the East County firefighting agency for six years,
is scheduled to retire this week, though he has agreed to continue on in a part-
time role until a new chief takes charge, Villarreal said.
