San Salvador replica set for launch
CHULA VISTA (KUSI) – Wednesday will see the long-awaited launch of the full-size replica of the San Salvador, the ship sailed into San Diego Bay in 1542 by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo.
The replica had been under construction at Spanish Landing Park for the last four years.
The San Salvador will sail the California coastline and act as a 'floating classroom'. The replica matches the original vessel in size, weighing in at 150 tons and measuring 92 feet long and 42 feet wide.
At the time it came to San Diego, the San Salvador was the first ship of European origin to sail along the Southern California coastline.
