SAN YSIDRO: Man dies while detained at border crossing
San Diego police are investigating the death of a 51-year-old man who
collapsed while being detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection
agents.
Lt. Ernie Herbert said Sunday that agents did not use any force when they took him into custody.
UT San Diego reports (http://bit.ly/XjRMAE)
the man and two relatives had driven to the San Ysidro border crossing
from Tijuana Saturday when they were directed to a secondary inspection
area. During the process, the man was handcuffed and taken to a security
office for further inspection.
Herbert said that agents removed the handcuffs and
asked the man to empty his pockets. He collapsed as he placed the items
on a counter.
The man's name and nationality were not released. An autopsy was pending to determine the cause of death.
