Santa Fe Christian Eagles 62, Horizon Christian Panthers 13

The Santa Fe Christian Eagles traveled to Serra High School to take on the Horizon Christian Academy Panthers. Going in to the game, the Eagles were on a four-game winning streak, while the Panthers were trying to put an end to a four-game losing streak. Unfortunately for the Panthers, the Santa Fe Christian Eagles soared high and came out on top with a 62-13 victory.

Horizon Christian Academy started off the 1st quarter with the ball and it looked like a promising drive that would result in some points on the scoreboard. The Panthers nearly made it to the red zone. However, Santa Fe Christian’s Hank Ontiveros came up with a huge quarterback sack to not only force 4th down, but it knocked the Panthers out of field goal range and as a result, they had to punt the football.

With Santa Fe Christian’s first possession of the game, the Eagles wasted no time putting some points on the scoreboard and they did it with the help of the same player who sacked Horizon Christian Academy’s quarterback, Hank Ontiveros. This time Ontiveros showed his speed on the offensive side of the football by leading his team into Panthers territory. Ontiveros’ strong running set up a Conner Whitton 20-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Phillips to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead. At this point the Eagles were just getting warmed up because they would go on to score 47 points by halftime.

While the offense was a dominating force on Santa Fe Christian’s team, their defense was just as strong. Three forced fumbles and two interceptions in the first half alone proved to be a huge part of their success. Overall it was a great win by a team that lost in the first round of playoffs last year. It appears, however, that they are on the right track to getting another shot at a CIF Division III Championship.

With this win the Santa Fe Christian Eagles (6-1) begin Coastal League play with a 2-0 record. A five-game winning streak gives them confidence going in to Week 9, but they will have a tough opponent as they host the Bishop’s Knights. As for the Horizon Christian Academy Panthers (1-7), they will take on the 6-1 La Jolla Country Day Torreys.  Be sure to tune in next week to the KUSI Prep Pigskin Report, San Diego County’s home for prep football highlights and features!

PREVIEW: The Horizon Panthers (1-6) will take on the Santa Fe Christian Eagles (5-1) at Serra High School this Friday night.

The Panthers are riding a four game losing streak and hope to break it against the Eagles. On the other hand, Santa Fe Christian is on a four game winning streak. They have shut out three of the six teams they have faced off against. Horizon quarterback Thomas Marcus cannot make mistakes unlike last week when he threw a pick six and his team fell behind by three scores. They will need wide receiver Oscar Cordova to play hard again like last week when he scored twice. For the Panthers they need to play better on both sides of the ball this Friday to get this victory versus a good Eagle team. Santa Fe Christian will be looking to get its second win in league play while Horizon will be trying to get its first. The Eagles are coming off a 56-0 stomping over Parker last week. They will be looking for another shutout this Friday against Horizon.

Do not miss out on this Coastal League match up, Friday night at Serra High School, game time set for 7:00 PM. Highlights of this game will be on the Prep Pigskin Report at 10:30 PM.
